“Those who attended one of Iowa’s country schools will relive fond memories watching this video. Those who never set foot in one will learn all about country schools, the backbone of Iowa’s education system for more than 100 years. " One-Room Wonders” recalls a by-gone era when a single teacher in a single room successfully faced the challenge of giving Iowa’s farm children a quality education. Their efforts helped make Iowa the most literate state in the nation.”

This video chronicles the history of farming in Iowa, from horse drawn plowing, milking cows by hand and threshing oats, to the advent of the modern tractor and the combine, and the effects of those changes on Iowa’s farm families. Told through the history of the farm that is now the Hardin County Farm Museum, this documentary uses interviews, old photos and video images of farming methods old and new to tell the story of the industry that made Iowa an agricultural leader, the family farm.

Also on this disk:

“Farm Life Over the Years” Farm life changed over the years in the farmhouse as well as in the barn and the fields. Farm wives also had to adapt to changing technology to meet the family’s food, clothing and other needs.

“This Old Barn” Recognized ‘Barnologist’ Ken Starek relates the history and evolution of barns in Iowa and in particular the features of the dairy barn that now houses the Hardin County Farm Museum.
